Saturday's Find

There are garage sale finds that are out in the open, on a table or standing by themselves, clearly marked with a price and waiting to be wanted by someone new. Then there are finds under piles of trash, in pieces, with just a suggestion of shape and color peeking through and calling out to be saved and loved. That’s how I found this copper weathervane - under wet, nasty trash, and guarded, I’m sure, by snakes and bugs.

It was at one of those packrat types of sales where the older woman just posted a notice in the paper and opened the garage doors. No cleaning. No planning. No pricing. Just junk, trash, and cheap prices.

But this wasn’t trash, and I couldn’t wait to get this lovely piece home. I washed the spider webs and mud dauber nests off the lovely patina and mounted it on top of an armoire in the living room. My saddle also sits there to remind me of Bubba, my horse long dead. I found the old enamel and metal Waverly sign years ago on IT Guy’s parent’s farm. It was covering a mud hole along a path. Really there were two signs. It was a big hole! (Someday I’ll show you where the other one hangs.) The round thermometer is an old Shiner Beer advertisement (from a bygone garage sale), and the pendulum wind-up clock is a gift from…well, let’s just say it was a gift and leave it at that.

  1. See, this is why I often miss good finds. I'm such a princess, I won't dig. I make my poor daughter get in there and ferret things out for me. Deb
